It will be a white Christmas in Freemans Bay this year. The opening night of Franklin Rd’s festive light display will see part of the street turn in to a ‘‘winter wonderland’’ thanks to a snow machine. Resident Roscoe Thorby says it is a first for the public event in the two decades since it started. ‘‘For some Auckland children this will also be the first time they have ever seen snow so it will be really exciting for everyone.’’ The Waitemata Local Board approved $5000 of funding towards this year’s opening night. It is hoped the snow machine will create a ‘‘snow playground’’ for children on December 1 when the lights are officially switched on. The event will continue its community-driven, commercial free spirit this year, he says. ‘‘We’ll have a local celebrity turning on the lights but we’re going back to basics. It seems to be what the community wants.’’
