Auckland Football’s women’s side has been left contemplating a potential fourth-placed finish this season after its defeat to Northern Football.

The ASB Women’s League’s ‘‘Battle of the Bridge’’ against Northern didn’t go Auckland’s way and they lost out 2-0 at William Green Domain on Sunday.

Goals in each half from Katie Rood and Tayla O’Brien, who scored direct from a corner, sealed Auckland Football’s fate.

But the margin of victory could have been greater for reigning champions Northern, with Hannah Hoeksema and Kate Seatter both denied by the crossbar in the second spell of the match.

The Young Ferns didn’t fare much better on Sunday. The national under17 women’s side was narrowly beaten 1-0 by Capital Football in Wellington.

They travel to St Peter’s School in Cambridge to take on Waikato-Bay of Plenty this Sunday, while Auckland Football face Central Football at William Green Domain.
