Olivia Shivas is already carving out a name for herself as a blogger.

She shares her experiences about life with muscular dystrophy on the Attitude website.

One of her first blogs details her experiences volunteering in 2007 at a Malaysian school for disabled children.

She says the trip highlighted the important of helping other people.

‘‘I think often people with disabilities aren’t usually thought of as people who can help others, because we are usually the ones getting helped,’’ she says.

Here is an extract from her blog:

One thing I noticed straightaway while I was out and about was I hardly saw anyone else in a wheelchair or with any disability for that matter.

When talking to my Mum about it she said it was because attitudes towards people with disabilities are pretty negative.

Disabled people weren’t discriminated against, but having a disability or a child with a disability was deemed to be embarrassing.

I decided to challenge this view by busking with my violin at the pasar malam [night markets].
