Angela Carter has won first place in this year’s Cult Couture fashion show with her garment made of plastic bags.

The Waterview artist scooped the top prize in the Recycled Revolution category with Hydra, a red dress made with plastic bags from The Warehouse, repurposed sheets and tulle ( Auckland City Harbour News, November 1).

‘‘I was holding my breath a bit as the runner-up was announced for each category first,’’ she says.

‘‘I thought ‘it’s the category prize or none!’ so it was exciting when they announced my name and the model walked out in Hydra.’’

With her $1000 prize money, Mrs Carter plans to put money aside for her next project and her sewing machine may receive its overdue service.

She would like to take her garments to high schools to engage more young people with ideas around using and manipulating materials that otherwise may go to landfill.
