Twilight start for Auckland Pride Parade
A twilight start time for next year’s Auckland Pride Parade means the celebrations will flow straight on to the after party.
The parade will start at the later time of 7pm at Western Park travelling the length of Ponsonby Rd and finishing at Three Lamps.
Feedback from Ponsonby businesses along the parade route, parade participants and festival-goers prompted the move, festival director Julian Cook says.
‘‘The Ponsonby Business Association and businesses want to keep their normal trading hours as clear as possible and, as they are a key partner, we really wanted to work with them.’’
Festival-goers were also keen to see the parade move to a later start, he says.
Parade director Richard Taki has been working for the last two months with stakeholders such as the Ponsonby Business Association, police and Auckland Transport to gain approval.
‘‘The later start time has more risks and costs associated with it than a daytime parade,’’ he says.
‘‘I’ve met with all the key stakeholders in order to ensure the event is held safely and with a minimal amount of disruption to residents, business owners and the public, whilst maintaining the integrity and vision of the parade.’’
The theme of next year’s parade is time. ‘‘I want us to think about our past, present and especially our future,’’ Mr Taki says.
The festival’s closing party will start right after the parade at an inner city venue.
Registration forms are now available for individuals and groups who would like to be part of the Auckland Pride Festival and Parade events and activities.
Registrations close on December 23 for the festival and January 17 for the parade. Volunteers are also needed for a variety of roles.
