But­ter­fly film to be in 3D

The del­i­cate orange and black monarch but­ter­fly trav­els miles to find a place to spend the win­ter. In New Zealand, they mi­grate to shel­tered spots all around the coun­try, mostly along the east coast.

But the most fa­mous mi­gra­tion each year is from North Amer­ica to Mex­ico.

Cana­dian film-mak­ers have cap­tured this sight in a 45-minute 3D film. The Flight of the But­ter­flies tells the monarch’s story as well as that of Dr Fred Urquhart, who fi­nally dis­cov­ered their shel­tered hiding places in the moun­tains of Mex­ico.

The NZ Monarch But­ter­fly Trust is hop­ing the film will be shown at the Imax the­atre in Queen St in May next year and wants ev­ery school, gar­den­ing club and na­ture lover to see it. The trust hopes to be able to of­fer free tick­ets to school chil­dren.
