Butterfly film to be in 3D
The delicate orange and black monarch butterfly travels miles to find a place to spend the winter. In New Zealand, they migrate to sheltered spots all around the country, mostly along the east coast.
But the most famous migration each year is from North America to Mexico.
Canadian film-makers have captured this sight in a 45-minute 3D film. The Flight of the Butterflies tells the monarch’s story as well as that of Dr Fred Urquhart, who finally discovered their sheltered hiding places in the mountains of Mexico.
The NZ Monarch Butterfly Trust is hoping the film will be shown at the Imax theatre in Queen St in May next year and wants every school, gardening club and nature lover to see it. The trust hopes to be able to offer free tickets to school children.
