Future on the rise for entrepreneur
A baker-turned-cookbook writer is one of the creative women sharing their secrets to success in a new book.
Lady Luck features the accounts of more than 20 Kiwi women, including Ponsonby baker Jordan Rondel and Grey Lynn editor Ellie Smith.
It was inspired by Lisette Prendergast and Mariana Collette’s blog Le Petite Mania which focuses on women balancing work and family.
Musician Ladi6 and performer Pinky Agnew are also among the book’s contributors. In it they share how they came to be successful, the challenges they faced and their advice for others.
Ms Rondel began cooking up a successful business out of a hobby almost four years ago.
She was studying towards a commerce and marketing degree when her dad suggested she get serious about baking after trying a piece of a ‘‘particularly successful cake’’.
In about three months Ms Rondel had set up a successful blog called The Caker and had her first wedding order.
A book deal followed and before long she had carved out a name for herself as the queen of the Auckland cake scene.
‘‘I still look back and think ‘how did it all happen so eas- ily?’,’’ she says. ‘‘I was setting myself up for an office job even though it’s not really what I wanted.
‘‘I guess the hardest thing is having the motivation to keep going.’’
Ms Rondel shared kitchens with some ‘‘big burly chefs’’ until finding a permanent place to create her sweet, homemade treats at K’ Rd’s Eighthirty cafe.
She pays her rent for the space in cakes.
Ms Rondel has one piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs.
‘‘Endure it through the hard times. It took two years before things got a little bit easier.’’
Ms Prendergast and Ms Collette hope the book’s success stories will inspire women throughout the country.
The duo write about everything from feminism to food in their blog, which now has more than 3500 visitors per week since it launched earlier this year.
‘‘We thought only our mums would read it,’’ Ms Collette says. ‘‘ We never thought we’d have so much web traffic so quickly.’’
Lady Luck is available now from bookstores.
Sweet deal: Jordan Rondel, better known as The Caker, pays the rent for her kitchen in cakes.
