Auckland Choral performs Messiah
A performance of George Frederick Handel’s Messiah will be given later this month at the Auckland Town Hall.
On December 16 and 17 at 7.30pm, Auckland Choral will perform the work under the musical direction of Professor Uwe Grodd.
Soloists include Italian soprano Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli, who recently won the final prize at the London Handel Singing competition.
New Zealand mezzosoprano Anna Pierard recently returned from Europe, while New Zealand-born tenor Christopher Bowen is a member of the BBC Singers.
Bass Shane Lowren- cev is a full-time principal artist with Opera Australia.
Messiah is composed in three parts which is then subdivided into scenes from the life of Christ.
In the second part, Handel focuses on Christ’s passion ending with the Hallelujah chorus.
When Messiah was premiered in London King George II is reputed to have risen to his feet during the chorus – beginning a tradition that continues to this day.
Messiah soloist: Mezzo-soprano Anna Pierard.
