Auck­land Choral per­forms Mes­siah

A per­for­mance of Ge­orge Fred­er­ick Han­del’s Mes­siah will be given later this month at the Auck­land Town Hall.

On De­cem­ber 16 and 17 at 7.30pm, Auck­land Choral will per­form the work un­der the mu­si­cal di­rec­tion of Pro­fes­sor Uwe Grodd.

Soloists in­clude Ital­ian so­prano Francesca Lom­bardi Maz­zulli, who re­cently won the fi­nal prize at the Lon­don Han­del Singing com­pe­ti­tion.

New Zealand mez­zoso­prano Anna Pier­ard re­cently re­turned from Europe, while New Zealand-born tenor Christo­pher Bowen is a mem­ber of the BBC Singers.

Bass Shane Lowren- cev is a full-time prin­ci­pal artist with Opera Aus­tralia.

Mes­siah is com­posed in three parts which is then sub­di­vided into scenes from the life of Christ.

In the sec­ond part, Han­del fo­cuses on Christ’s pas­sion end­ing with the Hal­lelu­jah cho­rus.

When Mes­siah was pre­miered in Lon­don King Ge­orge II is re­puted to have risen to his feet dur­ing the cho­rus – be­gin­ning a tra­di­tion that con­tin­ues to this day.
