Record attempt a step to raise awareness
Finding out his wife had secondary breast cancer prompted Adrian Smith to think outside the box.
He will attempt to set a Guinness World Record this Saturday by walking 106 times around Victoria Park in the dawn to dusk 100km Walk in the Light fundraiser.
He will start the walk at 4am and is hoping to complete the final lap by 8pm.
His wife Lyz Smith was diagnosed with life-threatening secondary breast cancer last year at the age of 48. Mr Smith wanted to do something special to support her.
‘‘It had to be difficult, challenging and attention-grabbing, something a person off the street couldn’t do without a lot of time and effort,’’ Mr Smith says.
He has already raised more than $8000 towards his $10,000 fundraising goal on the Give a Little website.
All the money raised will go to the charitable trust Sweet Louise, which supports New Zealanders living with secondary breast cancer.
Everyone is welcome to come and cheer Mr Smith on and there will be sausage sizzles, raffles, cricket games and other activities for children on the day.
Record attempt: Adrian Smith will walk around Victoria Park 106 times on Saturday in a bid to set a Guinness World Record and raise awareness of secondary breast cancer.
