Sinkhole caused by old water pipe collapsing

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Residents who came home to find part of their road collapsed into a sinkhole are hoping the incident was a one-off.

A collapsed sewer caused a hole of about three metres wide to form in Ponsonby’s Islington St last week.

The street was closed off while workers investigated the incident. Both the damaged wastewater pipe and road were repaired overnight.

The incident was caused by corrosion in the 80-yearold pipe, Watercare spokesman John Redwood says. ‘‘It’s pretty rare. ‘‘We do regular maintenance and inspect them to prevent pening.’’

The huge hole in the road dwarfed the 200 millimetre hole in the pipe, he says.
