Article alarmist

Auckland City Harbour News - - OPINION -

I was dismayed by your front page of January 15. The Auckland City Harbour News articles are usually humanistic and gentle, but the headline (‘‘Vagrant invasion’’, no less!), lead article, photos, and selected quotes from business, police, and council were shamelessly sensationalist and alarmist. Quite uncharacteristically for the News, there appears to have been no interest at all in why there are more vagrants in Auckland and, if there are, why unsubstantiated prejudices and accusations are being given so much attention.

Thank heavens the article reports enough of what the police and councilman actually said to show that the quotations may have been selected for their alarmist value.
