Mystery date pays off

Andrijana Milosavljevic had plans for Valentine’s Day but who she would spend the evening with was a mystery.

The 26-year-old lawyer and her two friends Anthony Plant and Ivan Steward came up with the idea of using their single status to their advantage to help raise money for their Oxfam Trailwalker team.

They set up an auction on Trade Me and let the winning bidder pick who they wanted to spend the evening with.

It was a close result with a girl who was bidding on Mr Plant missing out by $1. Miss Milosavljevic was surprised to find out that the top bidder was her university friend Michel Vacaru, who bid $200.

‘‘It wasn’t as creepy as it could have been. Part of me would have liked the potential for a laugh if it had been a random but it was also a bit of a relief that it was someone I knew,’’ the Eden Tce resident says.

Mr Vacaru is in a relationship so there’s zero chance of romance between the two, she says. But she was touched that he had made the bid.

‘‘It was really lovely. We had good chats about life and how everyone is from uni,’’ Miss Milosavljevic says.

The date was sponsored by Non Solo Pizza in Parnell. The three friends are no strangers to volunteering.

Mr Steward has been involved in not-for-profit organisations and last year he rode the entire South Island on a bicycle to raise money for a conservation Madagascar.

The Trailwalker event appealed as something a bit different, the environmental consultant says.

‘‘Oxfam obviously do really good work. The trail is well publicised so people get behind it and it’s a cool team building exercise.’’

Miss Milosavljevic has raised money for World Vision before as well as an independent trust in India.

‘‘We all enjoy setting goals and doing something which makes a difference,’’ she says.

The four member Oxfam group, known as The Proclaimers, have a goal of raising $5000 for the 100km Oxfam trail, held on April 5 and 6 in Taupo.

Good cause: Andrijana Milosavljevic auctioned herself off for a Valentine’s date as a fundraiser. Her university friend Michel Vacaru won the auction.
