Young rowers gear up for national champs
Hundreds of students from almost 40 Auckland schools took to the water at Lake Pupuke on Saturday for the New Zealand Head of Harbour regatta.
The event acts as the Auckland secondary schools championships and gets rowers ready for the nationals, the Maadi Cup competition, in March.
Mount Albert Grammar School crews put in strong performances and brought home the boys’ under- 18 coxless pair and the boys’ under18 coxed four in the competition.
The school had more than 30 crews competing in 22 events.
Mount Albert Grammar is fielding a relatively new squad compared with many established Auckland schools. It is the school’s fifth season of competing after a gap of almost 30 years.
The school crews are now gearing up for the North Island Championships which kicks off on March 7.
