Young row­ers gear up for national champs

Hun­dreds of stu­dents from al­most 40 Auck­land schools took to the wa­ter at Lake Pupuke on Satur­day for the New Zealand Head of Har­bour re­gatta.

The event acts as the Auck­land sec­ondary schools cham­pi­onships and gets row­ers ready for the na­tion­als, the Maadi Cup com­pe­ti­tion, in March.

Mount Al­bert Gram­mar School crews put in strong per­for­mances and brought home the boys’ un­der- 18 cox­less pair and the boys’ un­der18 coxed four in the com­pe­ti­tion.

The school had more than 30 crews com­pet­ing in 22 events.

Mount Al­bert Gram­mar is field­ing a rel­a­tively new squad com­pared with many es­tab­lished Auck­land schools. It is the school’s fifth season of com­pet­ing af­ter a gap of al­most 30 years.

The school crews are now gear­ing up for the North Is­land Cham­pi­onships which kicks off on March 7.
