U21 names on board
Fresh faces will join wellknown ones in the Auckland under-21 representative hockey squads this year.
The squads were announced on February 19 and players were selected during representative trials over the last two weekends.
Both the men’s and women’s squads will compete in the under-21 national tournament at Lloyd Elsmore Park in May.
The squads include youngsters aged 15 to 18 vying for a spot on the New Zealand teams aiming for the Youth Olympic Games in August.
Somerville Hockey Club and Roskill Eden Hockey each have a strong number of representatives in the squad.
Eight players from Somerville have made it, including Maddison Dowe, Su Arn Kwek, Abi Stuart, current Black Stick Liz Thompson, Sam Jimmieson, Taffarel Monteiro, Michael Ritchie and Jerome Van Rijn.
There are eight from Roskill Eden: Sarah Matthews, Melissa Simpson, Danielle Sutherland, Kayla Vao, James Belz, Ruan Bezuidenhout, Zander Fraser and Ken Hendricks.
Auckland University Hockey players have taken five spots in the team with Lani Gallagher, Nicola McDonnell, Tayla White, Jason Coventry, Richmond Lum.
Isla Bint and Tilly Galbraith of Mt Eden Hockey Club made the women’s squad.
Ground work: Auckland university player Richmond Lum has made the under-21 Auckland squad.
Top athlete: On February 15 and 16 St Cuthbert’s College athlete Natasha Eady competed in the New Zealand Combined Event Nationals, securing silver in the under18 women’s heptathlon. She had a great competition, missing out on gold by a mere 30 points and scoring two new personal bests.
