U21 names on board

Fresh faces will join well­known ones in the Auck­land un­der-21 rep­re­sen­ta­tive hockey squads this year.

The squads were an­nounced on Fe­bru­ary 19 and play­ers were se­lected dur­ing rep­re­sen­ta­tive tri­als over the last two week­ends.

Both the men’s and women’s squads will com­pete in the un­der-21 na­tional tour­na­ment at Lloyd Elsmore Park in May.

The squads in­clude young­sters aged 15 to 18 vy­ing for a spot on the New Zealand teams aim­ing for the Youth Olympic Games in Au­gust.

Somerville Hockey Club and Roskill Eden Hockey each have a strong num­ber of rep­re­sen­ta­tives in the squad.

Eight play­ers from Somerville have made it, in­clud­ing Mad­di­son Dowe, Su Arn Kwek, Abi Stu­art, cur­rent Black Stick Liz Thomp­son, Sam Jim­mieson, Taf­farel Mon­teiro, Michael Ritchie and Jerome Van Rijn.

There are eight from Roskill Eden: Sarah Matthews, Melissa Simp­son, Danielle Suther­land, Kayla Vao, James Belz, Ruan Bezuiden­hout, Zan­der Fraser and Ken Hen­dricks.

Auck­land Univer­sity Hockey play­ers have taken five spots in the team with Lani Gal­lagher, Ni­cola McDon­nell, Tayla White, Ja­son Coven­try, Rich­mond Lum.

Isla Bint and Tilly Gal­braith of Mt Eden Hockey Club made the women’s squad.

Ground work: Auck­land univer­sity player Rich­mond Lum has made the un­der-21 Auck­land squad.

Top ath­lete: On Fe­bru­ary 15 and 16 St Cuth­bert’s Col­lege ath­lete Natasha Eady com­peted in the New Zealand Com­bined Event Na­tion­als, se­cur­ing sil­ver in the un­der18 women’s hep­tathlon. She had a great com­pe­ti­tion, miss­ing out on gold by a mere 30 points and scor­ing two new per­sonal bests.
