Modern touch to Shakespeare
A rarely performed Shakespearean tale of voyages and death-defying escapes will be brought to the stage for the 51st Auckland Summer Shakespeare season.
Central city resident Caleb Wells will narrate the production of Pericles, Prince Of Tyre in the outdoor series.
The play can be likened to a Hollywood chase film.
Director Geoff Allen says Pericles will be a great way to introduce speare.
‘‘We’ve made it contemporary, with a live rock band, motorbike stunts, and more,’’ he says.
It is lesser known, yet one of Shakespeare’s most successful works.
It includes voyages, piracy,
Shake- and family lost and found.
Even intermission will be entertaining. Spectators have a chance to play cricket with three cheeky fishermen, while actors portraying denizens of the brothel where the play’s heroine is trapped will frequent the arena.
