Bold ideas are being voiced for the future of Auckland’s most notorious strip.

The Waitemata Local Board is developing a draft plan for the Karangahape Rd area and is consulting Aucklanders on what they would like to see happen to the precinct over the next 30 years.

More than 30 people attended a public ideas evening at the Pitt Street Methodist Church last week.

Waitemata Local Board member Vernon Tava, who is championing the precinct plan, says the meeting brought forth some really creative ideas.

Creating continuity where the street is broken up by the bridge, protecting heritage structures and the proposed inner-city rail link station were some of the items raised.

‘‘K Rd has suffered from a lack of a consistent approach with consents and assessment done on a case-by-case basis. It is a really under-protected area.’’

After further community engagement, the board hopes to formalise its draft plan by July.
