Tiniest canvas hosts creations

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

It took Virginia King more than three weeks to create her tiniest piece of artwork to date.

The St Marys Bay artist has transformed a 5cm by 7cm matchbox into a miniature masterpiece as part of Amnesty International’s art exhibition Strike.

Each matchbox will be auctioned on Trade Me to raise funds for the human rights organisation.

This year’s theme is Chasing the Dream.

Artists Shane Hansen and Michael Sass and musicians Jon Toogood and Tiki Taane are among those who have created work on the tiny canvases.

Ms King’s stainless steel design represents the wings of a night bird inspired by the idea of people needing extra protection at night.

‘‘It’s very fiddly working with an object of that size but also quite lovely.

‘‘It was a wonderful contrast from a 10.5 metre piece I’m working on at the moment.,’’ she says.

The tiny works will be displayed at The Depot Art Space in Devonport from March 1 to 6 before moving to Waikato Museum and Wellington’s Matchbox Studios.
