Busy schedule ahead of Kiwi sailors
Top sailors from around New Zealand are readying themselves for a couple of busy months on the water.
The New Zealand Sailing Team is gearing up for a series of international events, starting with the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Spain which kicks off on March 31.
Polly Powrie and Jo Aleh of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squad- ron, based at Westhaven, are members of the team.
The Olympic gold medallists will be competing in the 470 class events in the competition.
August and September will be key months in the 2014 calendar for the sailors, with the Olympic Games Test providing a trial run opportunity at the 2016 Olympic sailing venue.
The New Zealand team includes our Olympic campaigners who have made the top 20 per cent in their class at the most recent world championships and have shown consistency throughout the year.
Strong duo: Under-18 pair Jonathan Winter and Fergus McSwiney, with coach Josh Schmidt, won Mt Albert Grammar School’s first North Island Secondary Schools Rowing Championships gold medal for almost 30 years at this year’s event from March 7-9.
High hopes: Jo Aleh is heading to the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Spain this month.
