Busy sched­ule ahead of Kiwi sailors

Top sailors from around New Zealand are ready­ing them­selves for a cou­ple of busy months on the wa­ter.

The New Zealand Sail­ing Team is gear­ing up for a se­ries of in­ter­na­tional events, start­ing with the ISAF Sail­ing World Cup in Spain which kicks off on March 31.

Polly Powrie and Jo Aleh of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squad- ron, based at Westhaven, are mem­bers of the team.

The Olympic gold medal­lists will be com­pet­ing in the 470 class events in the com­pe­ti­tion.

Au­gust and Septem­ber will be key months in the 2014 cal­en­dar for the sailors, with the Olympic Games Test pro­vid­ing a trial run op­por­tu­nity at the 2016 Olympic sail­ing venue.

The New Zealand team in­cludes our Olympic cam­paign­ers who have made the top 20 per cent in their class at the most re­cent world cham­pi­onships and have shown con­sis­tency through­out the year.

Strong duo: Un­der-18 pair Jonathan Win­ter and Fergus McSwiney, with coach Josh Sch­midt, won Mt Al­bert Gram­mar School’s first North Is­land Sec­ondary Schools Row­ing Cham­pi­onships gold medal for al­most 30 years at this year’s event from March 7-9.
