Yoga just for grumps

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS - By JESS LEE

GRUMPY guys are becoming mellow men thanks to a yoga class designed just for them.

Grey Lynn yoga teacher Tracy Adshead created Grumpies Yoga to help middle-aged men de-stress, build strength and prevent injuries.

Most men’s testosterone levels naturally begin to drop after the age of 30, which can have a negative effect on their mood, Ms Adshead says.

‘‘According to a UK survey, men over the age of 52 start becoming noticeably grumpy.’’

Yoga has become a great way to switch off for 49-yearold Paul Shadbolt.

‘‘I find that the gym is a more active exercise, whereas doing yoga is passive, it’s more relaxing,’’ he says.

‘‘It’s a good counter if you’ve had a bad day at work. If you go to the gym you can still be on that same vibe but coming to yoga you forget about it.’’

The ‘‘grumpies’’ title is a good fit, he says.

‘‘I think it’s probably perfect. You should see me before I get here.’’

It was Ms Adshead’s husband who gave her the idea.

‘‘My husband, a selfconfessed grumpy, has seen me practice yoga for many years and he felt men would get great benefit out of it.’’

A lot of men can be put off by the thought of a traditional yoga class, she says.

‘‘But this one has been tailor-made for them. By this age men tend to be tight across the shoulders and hamstrings, whereas women are naturally more flexible.’’

Ms Adshead works on lung capacity and improving breathing to help men better deal with stress. Yoga can also help with old injuries.

The class runs at Grey Lynn Community Centre on Thursdays from 6-7pm. Phone 021 284 8444 for more details.
