Donated wedding a dream for couple

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS - By KELLY DENNETT

The bride had purple in her hair and the groom had a ball and chain attached to his ankle.

Angela Roberts says her March 29 nuptials to Mike McLeod at Western Springs was punctuated with great weather, good friends and above all, a little bit of humour.

But the comedy wasn’t the only unique thing about this day.

Roberts and McLeod were the beneficiaries of a wedding donated by a group of strangers from Facebook community Pay it Forward West Auckland (PIF).

The pair appeared in the Auckland City Harbour News’ sister publication the Western Leader in January detailing their fairytale wedding come true, thanks to Glendene florist Shari NevaMoffitt who offered to donate a bouquet to an engaged couple.

Bit by bit others contributed and soon enough an entire wedding was on offer.

Roberts was the lucky recipient after writing a heart-felt entry explaining the tough times her family had gone through after the death of her mother and brother-in-law.

She and McLeod had always hoped to get married but felt they could never afford the day themselves.

As a result of the article more kindness came out of the woodwork from as far away as Levin where a butcher couriered a pig up for the reception.

People continued to donate a dress, purple Dodge wedding cars, food and music and Roberts also received a call from a celebrant who had officiated at her son’s naming ceremony and her mother’s funeral. She too donated her services.

As for the day itself, Roberts says everything went perfectly.

It culminated in the reception at Waitemata Seagulls Rugby Club where 150 guests feasted on a hangi donated by a family who were up at 5am preparing the meat and vegetables.

The highlight of the day was her son Shaidyen’s speech, Roberts says.

‘‘He got up and said, ‘I know there’s a lot of people who want to get married. Don’t worry, your dream will come true just like my mum and dad’.’’

The pair can’t thank the community and Neva-Moffitt enough and in true pay-itforward style Roberts is donating some of her wedding garments on to others.
