Athletes get a boost

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

There’s a bunch of kids training hard for the Special Olympics World Summer Games being held in Los Angeles next year and the Auckland City Harbour News is going to help get them there.

Our fundraising arm, the Mad Butcher and Suburban Newspapers Community Trust, has teamed up with some big names of rugby league to hold an extra special luncheon at the Ellerslie Convention Centre on June 20.

Proceeds will go to Special Olympics New Zealand clubs across the Auckland region to support the young athletes who will represent their country in 2015.

The lunch will celebrate the careers of three local lads who went on to become stars of the game at an international level.

Brothers Kurt and Dane Sorenson both started their careers with the Mt Wellington Warriors before putting on Kiwi jerseys and the legendary Gary ‘‘Whiz’’ Freeman was a Northcote Tiger before his big leap to stardom.

All three are flying in from Australia and look forward to sharing stories with the audience where appearances will also be made by current Kiwi captain Simon Mannering and coach Stephen Kearney.
