Future leaders try out business skills

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Young women from the YWCA Future Leaders group are holding a garage sale tomorrow to raise funds for the programme.

The YWCA Op Shop will feature food stalls, raffles and a bouncy castle.

‘‘The Future Leaders will get to practise their leadership skills and also develop some business skills as they will be running the event themselves,’’ YWCA Future Leaders coordinator Kendal Collins says.

‘‘They will be organising and running their own stalls, donating used goods, promoting and advertising the event.

‘‘This will be a great opportunity for them to learn new skills.’’

Kate Small, a year 13 student from Onehunga High School, is part of the organising committee.

‘‘I hope it will give all the girls the chance to put to work some of the leadership skills they have gained. I also hope it will help them gain confidence,’’ Small says.

Collins is urging the community to get along to the event.

‘‘This is a great opportunity to come and support our young future leaders, pick up some bargains for yourself and help give back to the community,’’ she says.

Items on sale include clothes, shoes, books, jewellery, household goods, toys and furniture.

The YWCA Op Shop will take place at the Newton PIC Church, 2 Edinburgh St, Newton, between 9am and 1pm on June 28.

All money raised will go towards the Future Leaders programme.

Future leaders: Ella Smith, Sarah Smeets, Tylah Palalagi and Angel Tangianau.
