Ponies rear up for vital victory on weekend
Ponsonby Ponies have notched up their 13th win of the season downing Suburbs 28-17 at the weekend.
Shadbolt Park played host to the 14th round clash of the Alan McEvoy Trophy.
The tenth place Suburbs managed to keep the Ponies tryless in the first half and went into the break ahead 9-3.
After the break the Ponies turned things around and ran in three tries while Suburbs could only manage one.
Ponsonby’s Tom Wiley scored the first try of the match with Waha Waitohi and Tevita Hufanga also touching down.
The match wasn’t without controversy as referee Kyle Harris dished out five yellow cards, two going to Ponsonby and three handed to Suburbs.
The Ponies remain in second place on the competition ladder with 52 points while table toppers University sit on 59, a fair way ahead of the pack.
This weekend Ponsonby will get the chance to close the gap as they host the leaders at Western Springs Stadium.
University have only lost once this season and are coming off the back of a one point victory over Pakuranga at the weekend. Both sides will be desperate to get the competition points which should make for an exciting encounter.
Touchdown: Waha Waitohi scores a try for Ponsonby during their 28-17 win over Suburbs.
