Heartbreak led to a slice of a new pie
A slice of heartbreak pie was all that Delaney Mes needed to turn her life around.
The Ponsonby resident turned to the blogosphere to get over a tough break-up and started heartbreak pie.com.
‘‘When my ex-boyfriend and I broke up it seemed like a good catalyst to actually start it.
‘‘It was something I could throw my energy into and take my mind off things.’’
The blog grew and now Mes is a respected food writer which led to her being asked to be a judge in the NZ Bacon & Ham Awards.
‘‘It’s my third year doing it, it’s fun but it’s harder than everyone thinks.
all anonymous so you don’t know the brands you are eating.
‘‘You really have to think about each one, it’s people’s livelihoods so you have to take it seriously, it’s not just a big pig out.’’
Mes and the other judges look at the raw product then compare it to the cooked product followed by the all-important taste test.
The judging is done in one afternoon which is a far cry from the office Mes worked in before she started the blog four years ago.
In a previous life Mes was a privacy lawyer in Wellington until she realised she needed a change.
‘‘It got to the point that I was working, doing the blog and starting to play around with popup dinners. It felt like I had two fulltime jobs.
‘‘I decided to take the leap and go with the one that was more fun.’’
Between blogging and freelance writing Mes keeps herself busy with pop-up dining events and putting on different sorts of parties.
Cookbook plans are in the works but her dream is to have a cooking show in which she travels the world.
‘‘I always feel so inspired for the blog when I travel.
‘‘I’ve got so much to say on it, it’s just finding the time to write.
‘‘Initially when I was heartbroken it was a lot of how I was feeling and that’s evolved and changed.
‘‘I still like to put my personality into it but I do keep it focused on food.’
The NZ Bacon and Ham Awards take place on July 18 in Wellington.
