Heart­break led to a slice of a new pie

A slice of heart­break pie was all that De­laney Mes needed to turn her life around.

The Pon­sonby res­i­dent turned to the bl­o­go­sphere to get over a tough break-up and started heart­break pie.com.

‘‘When my ex-boyfriend and I broke up it seemed like a good cat­a­lyst to ac­tu­ally start it.

‘‘It was some­thing I could throw my en­ergy into and take my mind off things.’’

The blog grew and now Mes is a re­spected food writer which led to her be­ing asked to be a judge in the NZ Ba­con & Ham Awards.

‘‘It’s my third year do­ing it, it’s fun but it’s harder than every­one thinks.

all anony­mous so you don’t know the brands you are eat­ing.

‘‘You re­ally have to think about each one, it’s peo­ple’s liveli­hoods so you have to take it se­ri­ously, it’s not just a big pig out.’’

Mes and the other judges look at the raw prod­uct then com­pare it to the cooked prod­uct fol­lowed by the all-im­por­tant taste test.

The judg­ing is done in one af­ter­noon which is a far cry from the of­fice Mes worked in be­fore she started the blog four years ago.

In a pre­vi­ous life Mes was a pri­vacy lawyer in Welling­ton un­til she re­alised she needed a change.

‘‘It got to the point that I was work­ing, do­ing the blog and start­ing to play around with popup din­ners. It felt like I had two full­time jobs.

‘‘I de­cided to take the leap and go with the one that was more fun.’’

Be­tween blog­ging and free­lance writ­ing Mes keeps her­self busy with pop-up din­ing events and putting on dif­fer­ent sorts of par­ties.

Cook­book plans are in the works but her dream is to have a cook­ing show in which she trav­els the world.

‘‘I al­ways feel so in­spired for the blog when I travel.

‘‘I’ve got so much to say on it, it’s just find­ing the time to write.

‘‘Ini­tially when I was heart­bro­ken it was a lot of how I was feel­ing and that’s evolved and changed.

‘‘I still like to put my per­son­al­ity into it but I do keep it fo­cused on food.’

The NZ Ba­con and Ham Awards take place on July 18 in Welling­ton.
