The festival has been showcasing the best in secondary school orchestras, concert bands and jazz bands in Auckland since 1983.

More than 134 groups from 50 schools around Auckland are taking part.

They include St Mary’s College, St Peter’s College and Western Springs College.

This year the free festival was held at Westlake Boys’ High School and Westlake Girls’ High School from August 4 to 8.

It culminates in two gala concerts featuring the best groups selected by the adjudicators on August 10 at Westlake Boys High School. The 3.30pm concert will feature chamber orchestras and concert bands, while the 7pm gala concert will feature symphony orchestras and jazz bands.

‘‘Whether you attend as a performer or as a listener, you will come away invigorated and inspired by the musicianship and exuberance of all participants,’’ Dr Thwaites says.

‘‘It is through these performers that we can be assured of a quality musical future for New Zealand in the years to come.’’
