Changes to night lane closures on northwestern motorway

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

If you’re travelling on the northwestern motorway at night, be aware of nighttime lane closures related to the Waterview Connection project.

The closures currently affect the northwestern motorway westbound lanes between the off and onramps at Great North Rd.

Next week, eastbound lanes will be closed between Great North Rd and St Lukes Rd. Large concrete beams weighing between 60 to 69 tonnes and up to 36 metres long are being lifted into place for the second of the four interchange ramps to link the northwestern and southwestern motorways.

The NZ Transport Agency’s highway manager Brett Gliddon says the beams are lifted at night to minimise disruption, but for safety reasons the traffic lanes below need to be closed when the beams are being placed.

The concrete beams are being carried into place by a yellow gantry which was named Dennis, in memory of a project worker who died of cancer last year.

During the day the gantry will remain perched above the northwestern motorway, but it will not be working over live traffic lanes.

The Transport Agency says it plans to open the Waterview tunnels and interchange in early 2017.

Hard yakka: Dennis the yellow gantry carries beams in place during work to the Waterview Connection project.
