Rules for an­i­mals

Own­ers of chick­ens, bees, goats or other an­i­mals can now have their say on a pro­posed Auck­land Coun­cil by­law.

The new An­i­mal Man­age­ment By­law will re­place 18 sets of reg­u­la­tions in­her­ited from for­mer coun­cils.

It will in­tro­duce a sin­gle ap­proach to man­ag­ing an­i­mals other than dogs, en­sur­ing nui­sance and risks to public health and safety are min­imised. The by­law in­cludes pro­pos­als about keep­ing roost­ers, goats, pigs and geese.

‘‘There is a grow­ing trend of peo­ple want­ing to keep an­i­mals in ur­ban back­yards which is usu­ally a good thing but can cause prob­lems if not man­aged prop­erly,’’ Coun­cil­lor Calum Pen­rose says
