Tower targeted for luxury
An eye-watering $5 million penthouse apartment is included in plans for a luxury building in Freemans Bay.
It will be one of the most expensive apartments ever seen in Auckland.
New Zealand development firm Tawera Group is in the process of purchasing the 15-storey former Telecom headquarters on Hopetoun St to convert into an 18-storey apartment complex.
The 15,521 square metre site overlooking Auckland Girls Grammar School will feature 119 units starting at $390,000.
It will be known as the Hereford Residences and include a concierge doorman, library, gym, theatre and infinity pool overlooking the harbour.
The extravagant penthouse will have four bedrooms and bathrooms, a theatre, spa pool complex, petanque pit and badminton court.
Bayleys Auckland apartment specialist Trent Quinton says most of the buyers are expected to be owner-occupiers.
There is an increasing demand for high-end luxury apartments following several years of apartment building inactivity, he says.
This will be the first apartment block in New Zealand to have its own concierge, Quinton says.
‘‘That concierge will be far more than just a doorman. It is envisaged they will be the personal organisers for residents, organising everything from restaurant bookings and show tickets through to dry cleaning pick-ups and even car valeting.
‘‘Auckland’s commercial zone has been geographically pulled seaward over the past four years with new premium-grade office premises in and around Britomart, at North Wharf and with huge development along Fanshawe St.’’
