Friendly smile hard to find
What do you like best about central Auckland?
Being central puts me right in the hub of a vibrant city that has stamped itself as a worldclass destination. All manner of choices await you in this city.
How long have you lived here and where are you originally from?
I have ties with the far north (Ngati Hine). I have been living in the Ponsonby/Freemans Bay area for the best part of 25 years. I drive the mobile library bus out to everywhere from Remuera, Ellerslie and Mt Wellington to Mt Roskill, Hillsborough and Sandringham.
What do you like least and how can we fix it?
What I least like at this moment is the lack of a friendly smile or hello from the bus drivers who are the first contact for many. Not all fall into this category but with the long hours drivers work these days, no wonder the art of a smile or hello has fallen by the wayside. A smile will often lift you up.
Who does the best fish’n’chips in central Auckland?
You can’t go wrong with Sanford and Auckland Fish Market down at the newly refurbished Wynyard Quarter.
Who is the Kiwi you admire the most?
I put my Mum at the top of the list of who I admire the most. As a single mum bringing up six kids her aroha to look after us was truly inspirational. Well done Mum.
If I was Auckland’s mayor I’d . . .
Introduce Monday and Friday free public transport across the Auckland area which would free up the gridlock so I can get to the golf course quicker.
The spot in central Auckland I’d recommend to tourists is . . .
I would definitely recommend a visit to the Central City Library where you will find fabulous collections, lunchtime concerts, a fantastic children’s area, free wifi to contact your loved ones back home and, best of all, wonderful, helpful, friendly staff. So come and enjoy all that Auckland has to offer.
Nga mihi nui.
