A teenager is being dealt with by police after he allegedly went door knocking to collect money for a fake fundraiser. Police were alerted on Tuesday after a teenager visited homes around Pt Chevalier saying he was fundraising for an Avondale College trip to Christchurch. He gave his name to one resident and allowed them to take a photo of him. The resident contacted the college who confirmed there was no such trip. The teenager is believed to be a former student and police are speaking to him, Avondale Police Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley says. People should take care to establish that people collecting money are legitimate, he says. ‘‘Don’t be afraid to ring [the organisation] and confirm,’’ he says.
