Great village atmosphere

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

What do you like best about the city?

I love living in Blockhouse Bay which still has a great village atmosphere. A short drive or bus ride to the city allows me to follow great music, theatre, art, the city library and the myriad of interests that I have. The other thing I most enjoy is the diversity of ethnicities that live here and the wonderful richness of the subsequent cultural life.

How long have you lived here and where are you originally from?

I have lived in Auckland for over 60 years and in Blockhouse Bay since 1960. I was born in Raetihi but grew up in Wellington until we moved to Auckland in the 1950s.

What do you like least and how can we fix it?

The proliferation of high, impenetrable fences and stone walls that are spoiling our suburban streetscape and providing burglars with great cover as they commit crimes. They also make it difficult for those of us who belong to community patrols to carry out our work as effectively as possible.

Where’s the best place to buy dinner in the city?

Tanuki Japanese Restaurant & Sake Bar in the city, The Block and our wonderful cafes in Blockhouse Bay.

Who does the best fish n chips?

Blockhouse Bay Fish Shop.

Who is the Kiwi you admire most and why?

Sonja Davies, who despite poor health and great personal tragedy, lived her whole life devoted to improving life for women, the poorly paid, New Zealanders in general and champion of working people internationally. If I was Auckland’s mayor I would..... Make sure that our green spaces, streams and our heritage buildings including local houses were even more strongly protected from development than currently exists.
