Historical stories

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Historian Edward Bennett will regale festival-goers with stories from the past at Auckland Heritage Festival.

‘‘An English policeman arrived here in the 1860s and was sent out on the beat. He discovered a dead horse on the corner of K Rd. He had several attempts at spelling Karangahape in his notebook before dragging the carcass around to Pitt St. In the 19th century, people apparently called K Rd ‘the road’ rather than get their tongue around Karangahape because everything else in Auckland was a street,’’ he says.
