Top designer shares her secrets
Designer Liv Tapper is getting some valuable pointers from one of the industry’s finest.
The 32-year-old owner of the new fashion brand Formantera won a mentoring session with designer extraordinaire Kate Sylvester as part of the Smart Business Campaign run by mobile phone network 2degrees.
Tapper founded her brand in 2012 and was thrilled to have the opportunity to pick the designer’s brain for sales and marketing tips.
‘‘It was just amazing to hear about Kate’s experiences over the last 21 years, what she did well, and what she would have done differently,’’ she says.
‘‘It’s really cool that Kate has reached out to a young female designer, especially in fashion where people are quite protective. Sometimes you don’t get that in our industry.’’
Sylvester says a lot has changed in the two decades since she first broke into the industry.
‘‘I couldn’t get a single buyer to come and see us because the idea that we could create designer clothing in New Zealand was completely laughable.
‘‘We were a bunch of farmers in gumboots, whereas in the global world now you can be based anywhere, so that’s an amazing advantage.’’
