The Sattriya Dance Theatre Group will light up the stage at Aotea Square during this year’s Auckland Diwali Festival celebrations on October 11 and 12.

The dance troupe comes from Assam in India’s northeast and are led by Dr Menaka Bora, an award-winning soloist, choreographer and ethnomusicologist.

They will join more than 800 local artists who are performing at the festival.

‘‘The festival is an important part of our region’s event calendar, and a great opportunity for Aucklanders and visitors to experience a much-loved Indian cultural tradition,’’ Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) chief executive Brett O’Riley says.

Auckland Diwali Festival is presented by ATEED and the Asia New Zealand Foundation. It is supported by Fairfax Media, publisher of this newspaper.

Dance spectacular: Auckland’s Diwali Festival is a celebration of song, dance, food and culture.
