It has taken mayor Brown four years to get to the point of propos­ing Auck­lan­ders pay yet more to fix our trans­port sys­tem ( Auck­land City Har­bour News, Novem­ber 5).

And he does this one week be­fore key de­ci­sions start to be made on the next 10 year’s bud­get.

This bud­get also cur­rently pro­poses mas­sive cuts in walk­ways, parks, com­mu­nity cen­tres and other key lo­cal projects that over 4000 of you told us this ear­lier this year you wanted pro­gressed as part of the next three year Orakei Lo­cal Board Plan.

Why haven’t we spent the last year dis­cussing and de­bat­ing how best to fix th­ese is­sues – in par­tic­u­lar, trans­port?

The Gov­ern­ment has flatly ruled out the mayor’s heroic pro­posal to in­tro­duce na­tion­wide fuel taxes, so we are left with the mo­tor­way tax op­tion.

But th­ese is­sues are com­plex and the in­ter­na­tional ex­pe­ri­ence is mixed. Yet after four years as mayor, he will pro­vide Auck­lan­ders with around four weeks in Fe­bru­ary/March next year to pro­vide in­put – while also ask­ing what you
