The fate of six pohutukawa on Great North Rd may be known by Christmas. Auckland Transport says a report from independent commissioners on a proposal to remove and replace the trees is due in December. The trees, believed to be 80 years old, stand in the way of the $70 million St Lukes motorway project. More than 50 residents and groups fighting to save the trees were shut out on November 6 from having a say because of a clerical error. Auckland Transport says it will not comment publicly while the review is under way. The Auckland City Harbour News’ November 12 story on the subject should have said Waitemata Local Board’s lawyer is Nick Whittington.
