MARDI GRAS is coming to Auckland city’s most colourful strip.

Karangahape Rd is bringing the colour and culture of New Orleans’ annual Mardi Gras and Jazz festival to its First Thursdays event on December 4 and there will be plenty of free entertainment on offer.

About 25 businesses along the K Rd strip will be spicing up their menus and laying on live jazz. But you don’t have to book a table to be part of the fun – just wander down the street and soak up the atmosphere.

Samba dancers Brazilian Divas will perform at Ironbank, while gypsy jazz band Twisting the Swing take over St Kevin’s Arcade.

Craftswoman Sarah Lancaster will also be inviting adults and children to an umbrella decorating workshop.

Curator Rose Jackson says the Louisiana city knows how to throw a good party.

‘‘New Orleans is the starting point where so much amazing jazz, blues and blue grass developed. ‘‘It’s a real musical melting pot.’’ First Thursdays will run from 6pm till 9pm on December 4 along K Rd.
