Get cars off the road
What do you like best about Grey Lynn?
I love the community spirit. I have made many friends in the neighbourhood through my involvement with Grey Lynn 2030. I also love that everything I need is within walking distance from my home – the car can sit forgotten in the garage for days.
How long have you lived here and where are you originally from?
I have lived in Grey Lynn for seven years and have been in Auckland for 10 years. I was raised in Rotorua and then spent 15 years living in the country of my birth, The Netherlands, before returning to New Zealand.
What do you like least and how can we fix it?
This is a hard one to answer as there is not much to not like. I would like to see more cycling lanes in the area to promote cycling and make it safer.
Where is the best place to have dinner?
I love Cafe Viet on Surrey Cres and Coco’s Cantina on K’ Rd is also a favourite.
And who does the best fish’n’chips?
For a takeaway option or a quick eat I normally head to the Ponsonby Food Court as there is such a range of fabulous food available there.
Who is the Kiwi admire most and why?
I really admire my next door neighbour Phyllis. She is 98 and still living independently and enjoying life. She is a keen gardener and regularly pops over with homegrown vegetables, fruit or flowers for us. She has lived in her Grey Lynn home for well over 60 years now and can tell so many stories of life here.
If I was Auckland’s mayor, I would . . .
Get cars off the road by promoting cycling and public transport, making it cheap, safe and accessible for all. Also, having lived in the Netherlands for many years where they put cafes right on the beach, I would love to see more of this in New Zealand.
When I’ve got a few free hours I like to . . .
Head to one of Auckland’s fabulous beaches.
The spot in Grey Lynn I’d recommend to tourists is . . .
The Grey Lynn Farmers Market on a Sunday. It is a great place to shop, have a coffee and listen to some music.
Colinda: Loves Grey Lynn’s community spirit.
