United defeat Waitakere
Grafton United picked up their second two-day victory of the campaign when they defeated Waitakere City on first innings at Victoria Park.
A Dilan Peris century helped Grafton post a solid total of 247 on day one. Parth Patel was the hero on day two as he amassed a brilliant five-wicket haul that ensured the visitors were never able to threaten the total.
Patel claimed the first five wickets to fall, including the key scalp of City coach Dusan Hakaraia for 34, and ended with the outstanding figures of 5/34 from 14 overs. Daniel Ferguson then finished off what Patel had started taking 3/17 from an impressive 12 overs as the visitors were bowled out 77 runs shy of their target.
In Grafton’s second innings an unbeaten 49 from coach Alan Burton not only took him beyond the 700-run mark for the season but also helped his side reach 136/3 before they declared with a 213-run lead with 26 overs left in the day.
City’s top three batsmen appeared determined to try and chase down the target as all three scored at better than a run-a-ball. Two wickets apiece for Sam Rippington and Kyle Ruffel slowed down the scoring rate and the game fizzled out with the visitors on 102/6. Despite the victory Grafton remain five points adrift of Eden Roskill at the bottom of the Minor Championship ladder.
Grafton United 247 (D Peris 112, S Chaturvedi 47, B Lister 4/59) & 136/3 dec (A Burton 49no, S Chaturvedi 37no, M Ruffell 37) defeated Waitakere City 170 (D Hakaraia 34, P Patel 5/36, D Ferguson 3/17) & 102/6 (S Ansell 32no) on first innings.
