Next best thing
There will only ever be one King of Rock and Roll but Papakura is about to experience the next best thing.
British man Ben Portsmouth is known as the world’s best Elvis tribute artist and he’s coming to New Zealand on his world tour.
It’s his second time in the country, after performing last year at the free annual Elvis in the Gardens concert held at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.
A talented musician, singer and songwriter, Portsmouth had Elvis’ DNA in his blood from an early age.
His father was an avid Elvis fan and Ben grew up on a diet of Elvis songs. He started his own journey as an Elvis tribute artist in 2005 when he formed the Taking Care Elvis Band and blew audiences away with his uncanny resemblance to the real deal.
Portsmouth was voted the best Elvis at the largest Elvis festival in Europe and in 2012, he became the only nonAmerican ever to win the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist world championship title.
This success has led to sell-out shows across the world but Portsmouth remains humble about his likeness to the King.
‘‘There was only one Elvis Presley and I am just honoured to be able to remind people of his music and keep alive the music and memories of the King of Rock and Roll,’’ he says.
