Plenty of great parks
What do you like best about Mt Albert?
It so central to everything. It takes 10 minutes to get into the city and 30 minutes to get to the airport. There are great parks in the area, like Fowlds, Western Springs and Rocket that we walk to regularly with Tipi my border terrier.
How long have you lived here and where are you originally from?
I am originally from Auckland and returned seven years ago. Before this I was based in Lyttelton and Christchurch.
What do you like least and how can we fix it?
I was concerned about the potential loss of the six remaining pohutukawa on Great North Rd opposite Motat. Those trees are very old and mean a lot to the generations of families that live here. It’s good to see the right thing being done. But the people shouldn’t have to battle for things like that.
Where’s the best place to buy dinner? For casual dining there are a few including Mekong at the Ponsonby Food Hall, and Sri Pinang on Karangahape Rd and the local Vietnamese restaurant by Rocket Park.
And who does the best fish ‘n chips?
I like to think my healthier creative version is pretty good.
Who is the Kiwi you admire most – and why?
At the moment it’s my niece – Ianeta Hutchinson. Neta is a past pupil of Mt Albert Grammar and New Zealand Waterpolo representative. In year 12 she was awarded a full Scholarship to Arizona State University, where besides her academic studies she played waterpolo and became captain of the Sun Devils – the college water polo team. She graduated last year with a double major and won the top award for her year, Mouer Award. She is the assistant coach at Marist University in New York State.
