Nick Willis claimed his third national record within three weeks, adding the New Zealand resident 5000m record to the national indoor mile records set in the United States over the first two weeks of February. The Olympic 1500m silver medallist was up against the outstanding Robertson twins Zane and Jake who were having their first race back in New Zealand in eight years at Trusts Arena on February 27. With three laps remaining Jake was calling the tune in the lead in an attempt to pull his brother clear of Willis. Into the final 800m Zane made a bid for victory only to be quickly gathered in by Willis. Into the final lap and Willis had it sewn up finishing in 13:22.11, breaking Dick Quax’s New Zealand resident record of 13:24.0 set in Auckland in 1973. It is Willis’ first New Zealand resident record.

Long throws: Auckland Girls Grammar students Kayla Mehau and Ofa Hakeai both competed in the senior girls shotput which Ofa placed first. She also won the senior girls discus by more than 13 metres.
