Auckland City hoping for 10 wins in a row
Auckland City will be hoping to make it 10 wins in a row this weekend when they take on Wellington Phoenix reserves in the ASB Premiership.
The Navy Blues downed arch-rivals rivals Waitakere United 1-0 at Kiwitea St on Sunday in the 49th derby between the two clubs.
The lone goal scoreline came about in the ninth minute courtesy of another Ivan Carril free-kick from just outside the penalty area.
Oscar Garcia should have doubled City’s advantage from the penalty spot nine minutes later but hit the post.
Another Carril free-kick rattled the post seven minutes into the second half with the visitors lucky to be only one goal behind.
Skipper Ivan Vicelich was satisfied with the performance but lamented the missed opportunities.
‘‘I thought we played quite well and created chances in the first half but Sam Burfoot missed from six yards and we had a penalty hit the post.
‘‘Going in at halftime I thought we could be ahead by more goals but I think the boys did well to hang on to that win,’’ he says.
Auckland City will be hoping to carry that momentum into their last regular season match of the competition.
‘‘It’s good to get a win under the belt and hopefully another win next week. Waitakere played really well today and we’re expecting the same from the Phoenix next week,’’ Vicelich says.
Good knock: Eden Roskill’s Shaneil Sharma acknowledges the applause as he leaves the field disappointed after scoring a very good 89 runs.
Super spin: Grafton’s Dilan Peris prepares to deceive the batsman with a turning delivery.
Eagle eye: Auckland’s Ivan Carril celebrates scoring the only goal of the match.
In control: Oscar Garcia dribbles the ball up the field.
