Speaking to win
Young people with a passion for public speaking are being urged to enter the Race Unity Speech Competitions. The event was launched 14 years ago by New Zealand’s Bahai community to mark the annual Race Relations Day on March 21. Secondary school students nationwide will compete in 12 district competitions with winners competing in national finals. Auckland district heats will be held at St Columba Centre, 40 Vermont St, Ponsonby on March 25, 27 and 30 from 7pm. Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy says positive race relations aren’t something young Aucklanders should just read about in class. ‘‘We live in one of the most peaceful nations on earth but we can’t afford to take this for granted, human rights must live in the places we live.’’ Go to raceunity.co.nz for more information on the event.
