Northern Underwater Hockey took out both the men’s and women’s titles at the 2015 Interzone Championship in Wellington. The Auckland-based club put in a stellar performance on April 18 and 19 in both matches to beat their Wellington-based rivals in New Zealand’s premier underwater hockey event. The men’s team clinched a 5-3 victory in the final seconds of their match against the Central team that had held the title since 2008. With Central making a strong resurgence in the second half, a last minute goal by Liam Robertson secured the hard-fought victory. In the women’s division Northern secured its dominance, beating Central 4-1 in the final to secure the title for the third time in a row. Northern club referee Tony Colquhoun says the team’s efforts solidified a high level of underwater hockey in New Zealand. ‘‘The quality of hockey played at all levels just reflects the standing of New Zealand in the world,’’ he says.
