Sci-fi blasting off on Karangahape Rd
Don’t be surprised to find yourself among a world of aliens, space men and intergalactic performances while walking down Karangahape Rd on the evening of May 7.
The Dementerprise is taking the streets for all things science fiction in this years first instalment of First Thursdays.
Sci-fi themed music, drinks, movies, costumes, markets and arcades are just a few of the options ready to beam visitors to another planet.
Back for its sixth year running, First Thursdays curator Rose Jackson says the event is a chance to make the street ‘‘come alive’’.
‘‘It’s really just a great chance to celebrate the creative community we have up here,’’ she says.
‘‘There’s such a diverse range involved . . . there’s going to be about 30 different things going on everywhere you look.’’
A giant spaceship is set to be the centrepiece of the event to take visitors ‘‘out of this world’’.
Dandy & Co director Daniel Davis says intergalactic travel was the inspiration for the project.
‘‘One of the ideas was to experience life on board a ship. There’s going to be lights, smoke and everything. It enables everyone the chance to take off.’’
The project will also involve a photo booth and performances by several local DJs.
‘‘Its a place where people can come have a dance, go for a ride in the spaceship and have a pretty special time,’’ Davis says.
‘‘Taking over the streets’’ has posed its own set of logistical nightmares but Jackson has a firm grasp on the controls.
‘‘We’re going to have huge numbers coming through and it’s going to be a great time,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s a chance to support the local businesses and get involved.’’
Don’t be fooled into thinking this is an event just for Trekkies, Star Wars lovers and Slans – Jackson says there is room for the whole family to enjoy the festivities. Entry is free with events running from 6pm till 9pm on May 7.
