Kapa haka quest is highlight of Matariki

Auckland City Harbour News - - NEWS -

Kapa haka performers are once again being given creative licence ahead of this year’s Kapa Haka Super 12s.

The event is being held on July 11 at The Cloud, Queen’s Wharf and is one of Auckland Council’s signature events in the month-long Matariki Festival.

Teams of 12 performers get 12 minutes to impress the judges to win a share of $12,000.

Maori programme leader Anahera Higgins says 2degrees Kapa Haka Super 12s gives teams the chance to produce a high energy stage performance based on their interpretation of traditional Maori performing arts including poi, waiata and haka.

Auckland Council arts committee chairman Alf Filipaina says the event is ‘‘a true highlight of the Matariki Festival’’.

‘‘There’s a sense of the unknown in the performances and the potential for teams to do and try anything. It’s what makes this event so exciting,’’ he says.

Entries are open to anyone aged over 16 and close on June 10.
