Court last resort
An overdue rates case regarding a Kingsland property is heading to court. The residential rates bill, totalling more than $34,000, is one of six being pursued through the courts by Auckland Council. Other cases include more than $40,000 owed on an Auckland Central apartment and almost $43,000 on a Sandringham house. Parliament granted local authorities broad powers under the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 to assess, levy and collect rates. Court action is a last resort for Auckland Council, a spokesperson says.
