Mt Albert-Ponsonby await premier league fate
Mt Albert-Ponsonby FC’s fate for promotion into the NRFL Premier Division rests in the hands of Waitakere City FC tomorrow night.
The top two teams from Division One get promoted into the Premier League and the Anderson Park-based side are currently in second spot behind leaders Waitakere.
Waitakere will play thirdplaced Manurewa tomorrow and a win for the Chatham Cup runners-up would mean Mt Albert-Ponsonby secure their promotion.
‘‘Thursday’s game is out of our hands obviously so we have to sit and wait on the result going our way in order for us to be promoted,’’ Mt Albert-Ponsonby chairman Keith Earl says.
‘‘I think most clubs set out their season with realistic goals and we are no different.
‘‘We felt that with the appointment of new coach Scott Macay and the players he attracted to Mt Albert-Ponsonby, we would be a top five side but to be pushing to go up to the Premier League along with Waitakere is fantastic for us.’’
Earl says they would love the opportunity to be back in the Premier League after eight years.
‘‘It has been many years since we were in the top flight and we would relish the opportunity to be back there again. It has been a great season for the whole club and one of the most enjoyable.’’
The last time Mt Albert-Ponsonby were in the Premier League was eight years ago.
