Pon­sonby Rugby Club and Auck­land Rugby League life mem­ber Dr Lloyd Drake passed away early this month, aged 88. Dr Drake at­tended and looked af­ter hun­dreds of ath­letes dur­ing his ca­reer, help­ing them re­cu­per­ate and re­cover from in­juries and ill­nesses, and get­ting them back to com­pet­ing again. He also as­sisted Sir JohnWalker dur­ing his run­ning days. Dr Drake has been de­scribed as not just a good doc­tor but as a good friend, masseur and psy­chol­o­gist who was al­ways ac­ces­si­ble. Dr Drake was cap­tain of the Auck­land Gram­mar School ath­letic team and was the school’s sports cham­pion in 1946. He was hon­orary doc­tor to a num­ber of sports in­clud­ing athletics, row­ing, yacht­ing, surf­ing, cycling, canoeing, weightlift­ing, wrestling, swimming, vol­ley­ball, box­ing and bad­minton. Dr Drake was­made an Of­fi­cer Of the Bri­tish Em­pire in the 1980 New Year Hon­ours List for ser­vices to sports medicine.
