Ponsonby Rugby Club and Auckland Rugby League life member Dr Lloyd Drake passed away early this month, aged 88. Dr Drake attended and looked after hundreds of athletes during his career, helping them recuperate and recover from injuries and illnesses, and getting them back to competing again. He also assisted Sir JohnWalker during his running days. Dr Drake has been described as not just a good doctor but as a good friend, masseur and psychologist who was always accessible. Dr Drake was captain of the Auckland Grammar School athletic team and was the school’s sports champion in 1946. He was honorary doctor to a number of sports including athletics, rowing, yachting, surfing, cycling, canoeing, weightlifting, wrestling, swimming, volleyball, boxing and badminton. Dr Drake wasmade an Officer Of the British Empire in the 1980 New Year Honours List for services to sports medicine.
